Furniture upholstery and boat upholstery are different trades using different materials. Sun, salt and standing water demand marine-grade vinyl, UV-stable thread and foam that drains instead of holding water. Shops here state that they do marine work — seats and cushions, pontoon furniture, bimini tops and covers. Measure or photograph the seat base before you call; quotes depend on whether the frame and foam are reusable.

Ask specifically about thread and foam. Polyester thread rated for UV outlasts nylon in sunlight, and closed-cell or reticulated foam is what keeps a wet seat from turning into a sponge. A cheap rebuild using furniture materials looks identical on day one and fails by the second season.

Good to know

How much does it cost to reupholster boat seats?

Commonly $150-400 per seat depending on size, whether the foam is replaced and how much of the frame survives. A full pontoon interior runs into the thousands, and most shops quote after seeing photos of the existing seating.

What is marine vinyl?

Vinyl made for outdoor and wet use: UV inhibitors, mildew-resistant backing and cold-crack ratings so it does not split in winter. It is heavier than furniture vinyl and is the reason a proper marine job costs more per yard.

Can a regular upholstery shop do boat seats?

Some can, but the materials and the thread are what matter. A shop that does marine work regularly stocks marine-grade vinyl and UV thread; one that does not may build a beautiful seat that fails in a season of sun.
