What's the difference between a tailor and an alterations shop?
An alterations shop adjusts a garment you already own — hems, seams, zippers, taking in or letting out. A tailor can do all of that and also cut and construct a garment from fabric, which is what you want if you've bought material and need it made up. Many businesses do both, but the skill sets are different and so is the price.

Can a dry cleaner do alterations?
Often yes — in the United States counter alterations at dry cleaners are common, and for a hem or a simple seam that's usually all you need. For structured work such as a jacket, a suit or a bridal gown, look for a shop that lists tailoring as its own service rather than as an add-on.
